A Home for the Arts of Healing

About Us

Mixed Media by Neil Murphy

How We're Helping

Art is a powerful healing tool to explore deep emotions - the sorrows, the struggles, and joys.  It has the ability to transform us by awakening parts of ourselves to recover and heal from earlier traumatic memories. Through artwork, poetry and music, people can develop their own personal vocabularies for a fuller identity. Through the sharing of the artists' work, we can open up a greater community dialogue for a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the mental health world, and in doing so, shed the stigma that haunts those who suffer from a disease that touches each and every one of us.

The RDG artist members' exhibition of their work will open the talk about how to support mental illness or personal experiences with mental health challenges.  Through the sharing of these special artwork, we can open up a greater community dialogue for a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the artist’s creative world and in doing so, help those who suffer in the mental health.

RDG Story

Red Door Galleria is a contemporary art gallery serving as a site for exhibitions and public programs working with established international and local mid-career and emerging contemporary artists. We represent and promote artists working in a wide array of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, music, poetry and installation that's related in supporting the mental health topic.

We are located in downtown Wausau in the historic River District.

A portion of proceeds of specific exhibitions will benefit different  non profit corporations that support the mental health community.  We strive to give those whose lives have been disrupted by mental illness an opportunity to experience meaningful work and relationships as they reintegrate into the broader community

Thank You

We would like to thank all the artists in this journey who have opened their souls and shared their creativity.  They have allowed RDG a window into their lives, their struggles and their triumphs in helping create this special forum together to help those in need of hope. A special Thank You to all the gallerists and businesses  for allowing us to have special satellite exhibits in their wonderful locations.

Paintings by Carrie Hollister
"El Oratorio: Saints, Altars and Angels"

Exhibit runs December 16, 2018 through February 14, 2019

Opening Reception on Sunday, December 16th, 2 to 5 pm.

Carrie Hollister is a self taught painter, dividing her time between northern coastal California and Caribbean Mexico. Her works portray the reflective culture of Latin American Catholicism, the expansive presence of nature and the daily life rhythms of her Mexican neighborhood. Seeking to portray these themes in a manner free of artifice or manipulation she presents her viewer with the a sense of “be here now”.... with the flickering candle and milagro strewn altar, with the the bright hillside framed by cypress and eucalyptus , and with the awkward staircases, narrow alleyways and colorful detritus.

“From Here On Out”
Drawings by M Peterson
The theme of the work is the path where M has traveled. What She has navigated through her experiences and perceptions. Wherever you’re in at of existence, “from here on out” always have courage to dig deep in choosing a healthy new path.

Drawing has been central to M as a creative individual. Her talent was encouraged from a young age and she accelerated academically. She took college level drawing courses at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County and Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design while still in high school. At 17 she fell into her first major depression, accompanied by a skiing accident that left her with a head injury. Although not diagnosed at the time, this would be the beginning of a life long struggle with mental illness. It was not until she was 30 that she sought professional help and subsequently diagnosed with major depression and bipolar II. The years between, M attended different colleges and kept at her art. She was recognized with different merit scholarships and participated in school shows and publications. Her BFA emphasis was in printmaking which culminated in a 2015 Senior Exhibition. She currently has a working studio at Red Door Galleria in Wausau and is a board member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
